American psychologist William James and famous writer Henry James were born in the same family. They are equally a source of pride in America, but Henry James was naturalized in England. Unlike William, Henry could not settle down in one fixed place, and wandered about here and there all through his life. His eccentric wandering habit seems like to have been inherited from his father. I studied the James family chronicle and come to the conclusion that there were many intrafamilial conflicts, including parental influence on their offsprings’ psychological growth, oedipal issues, sibling rivalry and envy. In his creative works, Henry James deals with consistent themes related to his own unresolved personal conflict and family atmosphere. Especially, his unique ghost stories show the struggle with his internal objects. |
